Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Kannapolis Intimidators dropped both games of a doubleheader and have lost three straight, the last three of a five-game series, to the Savannah Sand Gnats with 1-0 and 9-3 losses on Monday night in Savannah.
In game one, John Church kept the Intimidators off balance all game as the only hit he allowed occurred in the first inning on a 3-2 pitch with two outs to Brady Shoemaker. The lone chances with runners in scoring position occurred in the fifth after a walk and a ground out put Jose Vargas at second with two down and Miguel Gonzalez struck out. All told, Church (7-1) went seven innings, allowed a hit and a walk and struck out five.
Justin Collop fared well but had one lapse in the fourth inning. Despite leadoff walks to batters in the first and second, Collop (8-9) was clean through three innings. In the fourth, with no one on and two outs he hit Jordan Abruzzo and then walked RJ Harris before a bloop to left field by Nick Santomauro hit off the glove of a sliding Vargas, scoring the only run of the game. Despite going six innings, Collop does earn his second complete game of the season.
In game two, the Intimidators (23-26) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on an RBI-double by Nick Ciolli and a two-run triple by Jordan Cheatham but could not muster a single run the rest of the game.
In the bottom half of the first off starter Zach Piccola (2-5) the Sand Gnats (22-28) responded with three runs and seven total against Piccola who was extremely unlucky as he pitched to weak contact and saw bad bounces, swinging bunt singles and awkward hops in the infield hurt his line. The Sand Gnats (22-28) added two more runs, one off Chase Cooney and one off Orlando Santos, while 2nd round pick in 2010 Jake Petricka tossed a scoreless fifth inning.
The Intimidators return home tomorrow to begin their second-to-last homestand with game one of a four-game series with the Hickory Crawdads. Andre Rienzo will be the starter for the 7:05 pm contest and he will be opposed by Braden Tullis.
