Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats swept a doubleheader from the Kannapolis Intimidators Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium winning two games of very different characters. John Church was the star in a pitchers' duel in a 1-0 win in game one. The Gnats' (22-28/64-56) offense took over in game two: every starter reached base safely, while pounding out 11 hits in seven innings on the way to a 9-3 win.

Church (7-1, 2.07) was dominant in game one, throwing seven shutout innings while facing two over the minimum in finishing off the complete game shutout. He allowed just one hit, a single to right field in the first inning, and one walk. He struck out five and induced 13 ground ball outs.

Savannah scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs and the bases empty, DH Jordan Abruzzo was hit by a pitch and R.J. Harris walked to put runners at first and second for RF Nick Santomauro. Santomauro doubled to leftcenter, driving home Abruzzo.

Game two was very different. The Intimidators (23-26/54-64) scored three runs in the top of the first against starter Collin McHugh for an early 3-0 lead, but the Gnats answered right back with three of their own in the bottom of the first. The big hit in the bottom of the Savannah first was a two run home run that R.J. Harris crushed to right field to even the game at 3-3.

Savannah took control of the nightcap with a four-run bottom of the second. Consecutive singles from RF Nick Santomauro, 3B Jet Butler and 1B Alex Gregory scored Santomauro to give the Gnats a 4-3 lead. The Gnats scored three more times in the inning without another hit. 2B Alonzo Harriswalked to load the bases, and CF Matt den Dekker walked to force home Butler for a 5-3 lead. Gregory scored on SS Robbie Shields' RBI groundout. Alonzo Harris brought home final run of the inning on a wild pitch to give the Gnats a 7-3 lead.

The Gnats added single runs in the third and sixth innings to complete the game's scoring while McHugh fought his way around runners in the second, third and fifth innings to finish five innings for his fourth win of the year.

The Gnats open a four-game series with the Augusta GreenJackets Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium at 7:05 when RHP Armando Rodriguez (6-8, 3.51) takes on RHP Chris Heston (4-11, 4.15).
