
International League Names Players of the Week

The International League announced today that Indianapolis outfielder Starling Marte and Norfolk closer Pat Neshek have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from
June 25-July 1. Marte joins two-time Pitcher of the Week Justin Wilson as the only Indians to bring home an IL weekly award this season, while Neshek is the first member of the Tides to be so honored in 2012.
STARLING MARTE, Indianapolis Indians IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
In a week in which he was named to the International League All-Star Team, Indians outfielder Starling Marte paced the circuit with three home runs, 15 hits, and a .968 slugging percentage to go along with a .484 batting average and 13 RBI. Marte collected multiple hits in each of his seven games this week, scoring in six of them and driving in multiple runs in four games. In Thursday's game against Toledo, Marte had five RBI, all coming with two outs. He also tripled twice this week, pushing his League-leading total on the season to ten.
23-year-old Starling Marte is in his sixth season as a professional player, all having come within the Pittsburgh organization. This is his first year playing above the Double-A level. Marte is a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
PAT NESHEK, Norfolk Tides IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Right-handed reliever Pat Neshek appeared in three games this week for the Tides, tossing a total of 4.2 perfect innings with eight strikeouts and three saves. Neshek threw more than 1.0 inning in all three outings. On Monday at Toledo, Neshek closed the door on the last 1.2 innings of the game, striking out two. Wednesday he saved a 3-1 game at Columbus by recording the final four outs, three of them by punchout. Back home Saturday against Syracuse, Neshek tossed 1.2 innings, collecting three more strikeouts. Neshek has now converted six straight save opportunities dating back to June 14. He has not surrendered a hit since May 29.
31-year-old Pat Neshek has pitched professionally since 2002. He spent last season in the San Diego organization after having played his entire career up to that point in the Minnesota system. Neshek signed with Baltimore this past January as a free agent. Neshek is a native of Madison, Wisconsin.
