Inter Miami CF News Release
Inter Miami CF hosted a special sendoff celebration at DRV PNK Stadium over the weekend for dozens of Special Olympics athletes, families and coaches ahead of their journey to Orlando to compete in the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games.
Around six hundred athletes and one hundred coaches representing Florida will make the trip to Orlando to compete in this year's games, which is currently taking place from June 5-12. Among the events the athletes will be competing in are basketball, cheerleading, flag football, soccer, powerlifting, and stand-up paddleboard.
Many of the athletes at the sendoff celebration praised the sense of inclusion that the Special Olympics provides; a sentiment shared by Inter Miami in its mission statement that sport is for everyone, and that the club brings people together.
Inter Miami CF co-owner David Beckham attended the sendoff celebration as a surprise to the athletes, and shared words of encouragement to them ahead of their upcoming events.
"We are very proud of you, and we're looking forward to seeing what you can all achieve," Beckham said while addressing members of the delegation and wishing them success.
The athletes of the Florida delegation will join a group of more than 5,500 athletes and coaches from all 50 states and the Caribbean, 20,000 volunteers and an expected 125,000 spectators in Orlando for the week of June 5-12. Inter Miami CF first got involved with the Special Olympics when it launched the inaugural Inter Miami CF Special Olympics Unified Team (IMCFSOUT) in 2021. The team is made of athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities and unified partners. The 2022 IMCFSOUT squad visited DRV PNK Stadium earlier this year when Inter Miami CF hosted D.C. United in May. Read more about the IMCFSOUT here.
