Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Modesto, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino downed the Modesto Nuts 6-2 on Thursday at John Thurman Field and matched a season-best fourth consecutive win. Inland Empire pitching did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and improved to 8-2 against the Nuts in 2019.
The 66ers (44-70, 18-27) got a run in the third on when DC Arendas tripled and came home on Leonard Rivas' single against Nuts' righty Clay Chandler (1-2). The Sixers got two more when Devin Davis hammered a two-run shot to left center, his fifth homer of the year. The Sixers made it 4-0 in the fifth when Orlando Martinez doubled to extend his hitting streak to 11-games and then scored on Mike Stefanic's RBI double. The Sixers made it a 5-0 lead in the sixth when Leonardo Rivas knocked a RBI single against reliever Ray Kerr. Meanwhile the Sixers staff was rolling. Starter Aaron Hernandez walked three batters in his first 1.2IP but ironed out the kinks and finished with four no-hit innings striking out four. Jorge Tavarez (3-2) tossed a perfect fifth but the Nuts (52-63, 22-23) did crack through in the sixth as Jose Caballero singled with one out as the Nuts got RBI doubles from Jerred Kelenic and Jack Larson to cut the lead to 5-2. The Sixers bounced back with a run on a RBI infield single from Spencer Griffin for a 6-2 advantage. The score held up as Nate Bertness picked up his third save of the season with 3.1 innings of one-hit shutout work.
The series continues Wednesday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
