Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Right fielder Brian Myrow and center fielder Jeff Salazar each collected four hits, while starting pitcher Ty Taubenheim allowed just one run over 5.1 innings for the win as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Columbus Clippers 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.

With the win the Indians improve to 65-66 overall and 35-31 at home, while the Clippers fall to 52-78 overall and 25-40 on the road with the loss. The win for Indianapolis gives them a 3-1 series win and gives them the season series victory, 11-10.

Taubenheim (5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) pitched efficiently as he allowed just five hits and walked none over his 5.1 innings to earn his sixth victory of the season, his fifth as a starter. Taubenheim started strong as he retired the side in order in the first, third, and fifth innings on is way to picking up his first win of the season against the Clippers in four tries.

Myrow (4-for-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI) had a career day at the plate as he collected four hits in four at-bats, hit two solo-shots over the right field fence and drove in three of the Indians' four runs. The left handed slugger turned in an impressive series against the Clippers as he hit .529 (9-for-17) and drove in five runs in the four-game series.

Salazar (4-for-5, 1 R) also had a big day at the plate as he compiled four hits in his first start since re-joining Indianapolis. The left handed speedster collected three infield hits in his first game with the Indians since June 29th and with his total of four hits, Salazar posted his first multi-hit game since June 28th.

Myrow got the offense going for the Indians in the first inning when he blasted a solo shot on a 1-2 count for his 13th longball of the season and sixth with the Indians. Later with the bases loaded in the third inning, Myrow hit what turned out to be the game-winning run as he smacked an RBI single to left field that scored SS Argenis Diaz, who reached on base of hit of his own earlier in the frame.

Columbus, responded with some offense of their own in the sixth inning as CF Michael Brantley (1-4, 1 R, 2 SB) lined a single to right field and then proceeded to steal second and third base. He then trotted home when 3B Wes Hodges (3-for-4, 1 RBI) launched a double off the wall in center field.

However, Myrow followed up in the seventh inning with his dinger to right center field that sealed the victory for the Indians and established a new personal single-game high this season with his two HR and three RBI.

Myrow and Salazar were not the only Indians to collect multiple hits, as Argenis Diaz (2-for-4, 1 R) collected hits in the third and eighth innings and LF Tagg Bozied (2-for-3) extended his on-base streak with base knocks in the fifth and seventh innings. With his two singles, Bozied has now reached base safely in 20 of his last 22 games and raised his average more than 76 points during that span. Hodges was the only Clipper to turn in a multi-hit performance as he collected three base knocks, including an RBI double.

Taubenheim got plenty of help from Indianapolis' bullpen as relievers Jeff Sues (1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 SO) and Corey Hamman (0.1 IP, 2, BB, 1 SO) combined for two innings of scoreless relief. Both Sues and Hamman earned holds for the Tribe, while Indianapolis' closer Jean Machi (1.2 IP, 1 H) earned his fourth save of the season after he allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings.

Columbus starting pitcher Ken Ray (5.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) suffered the loss, after he allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits over 5.0 innings pitched. With the loss, Ray falls to 2-9 on the season and 0-6 over his last 11 appearances.

Indianapolis begins a four-game series at division rival Toledo on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. RHP Virgil Vasquez is scheduled to start for the Indians, while RHP Eddie Bonine is expected to get the nod for the Mud Hens.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:10 p.m.

Post-game quote -- RF Brian Myrow

(on his two home runs in Wednesday's game)

"Well I was looking for something middle of the plate or in to try to hit and I was able to get the ball up into the wind. I hit a couple this week that I thought may have a chance, but the wind really helped me out today for sure."

(on how he has been successful at the plate lately after struggling in early August)

"I'm just trying to hit the ball out in front. I have a tendency use my body just a little too much so I am just trying to use my hands and get out in front. I've worked with Branson (Indians' Hitting Coach Jeff Branson) a little bit in the cage and he throws to me regularly now right before the game and gets me ready to go."
