Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Right-handed pitcher Jeremy Powell limited the Buffalo Bisons' offense to one earned run in six innings of work, while catcher Erik Kratz went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Indianapolis Indians to a 5-4 win on Sunday afternoon at Victory Field.
The win improves the Indians' record to 16-14, while the loss drops the Bisons record to 17-13. With the victory, Indianapolis wins the series 3-1 with a four-game set against the Bisons scheduled to take place in Buffalo from June 17-20.
The Indians took an early 1-0 advantage as CF Jose Tabata reached on an error by Bisons' SS Ruben Tejada to begin the contest and was promptly plated on 2B Neil Walker's 12th double of the season, a line shot to the gap in center field.
However, Buffalo erased the Indians' advantage with two runs in the top half of the third inning, when, with runners at first and third and two outs, C Josh Thole lined the first offering of his at-bat to left field for a triple to drive in 3B Mike Hessman and 2B Russ Adams.
The Indians retook the lead with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth inning. RF Brandon Jones led off the frame with a single and advanced to third on a double by LF Brandon Moss before the next Indians' batter, Kratz, lined a base knock to center to drive in both runners and give the Indians the 3-2 lead.
The two teams traded runs in the fifth inning - on a two-out RBI single by Thole for Buffalo and a solo home run by 1B Brian Myrow for Indianapolis - before Walker gave the Indians a 5-3 lead with a solo home run to left field in the home half of the seventh inning. The long ball was Myrow's third on the season and his first since he hit a grand slam against Pawtucket on April 28, while, with his solo shot, Walker has now reached safely in 17 of his last 18 games played.
Buffalo threatened in the ninth inning, scoring a run on a lead off home run to right field by LF Chris Cater, but with runners on first and second with two outs, CF Jason Pridie grounded out to Indians' RHP Jean Machi, who fielded the ball and trotted to first base for the unassisted out to end the rally.
Indians' RHP Powell (6.0 IP, 10 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) allowed one earned run and scattered 10 hits in six innings of work to earn his third victory of the season, while relievers Justin Thomas (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Wil Ledezma (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO) each tossed a scoreless inning to set the stage for Machi (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO), who earned his fourth save of the season. Bisons' RHP R.A. Dickey (6.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 H) was saddled with his second loss of the season after allowing four runs (three earned) in six innings of work.
In a contest that featured 24 total hits, the Tribe offense had four batters tally multiple hits on the afternoon, with Walker (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI), Myrow (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB), Kratz (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and SS Argenis Diaz (3-for-4) leading the way for the Indians. Four batters - Pridie (2-for-6), Carter (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI), Thole (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 1 BB) and Tejada (2-for-4, 1 2B, 1 BB) - recorded multiple hits for the Bisons.
The Tribe now welcomes the Rochester Red Wings to Victory Field for a four-game series beginning on Monday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m. RHP Daniel McCutchen is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis, while LHP Glen Perkins is the probable starter for Rochester.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and broadcast live on Comcast and Bright House Networks digital channel 81 with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show on WXLW-950 AM begins at 6:40 p.m.
