Norfolk Tides News Release
Chris Tillman struck out 10 in seven strong innings and Brandon Snyder clubbed a solo homer to lift the Tides to a 4-1 win over Toledo Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
The 10 strikeouts were a season-high for Tillman (3-3), who earned his third straight victory and lowered his ERA to 3.49. The 22-year-old yielded just one walk and four hits, and each of the final six outs he recorded came via a strikeout.
Tillman faced just four batters over the minimum, throwing 62 of his 96 pitches for strikes. He's now gone 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA, 24 strikeouts, four walks and 19 hits allowed over his last four starts.
Snyder led the Tides offense with two hits, one of which was a leadoff homer off Toledo starter Ryan Ketchner (0-1) in the fifth inning. Snyder also led off the seventh inning with a single and eventually scored on a throwing error by Toledo shortstop Brent Dlugach.
With Norfolk leading 4-1, Toledo mounted a rally against reliever Alberto Castillo, who allowed a single and two walks before being pulled with the bases loaded and one out. Closer Frank Mata was summoned from the bullpen and struck out Danny Worth on a 3-2 count for the second out, then induced Jeff Larish to ground out to first base and escape any damage.
Mata then worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to wrap up the win and earn his fifth save of the season.
Jeff Larish powered Toledo's offense with two hits, one of which was a leadoff homer off of Tillman in the seventh inning. Casper Wells singled twice for the Mud Hens, who travel to Durham Monday for a four-game set with the Bulls.
Scott Moore singled and added a sacrifice fly for the Tides, who wrapped up their eight-game homestand at 5-3.
Norfolk opens an eight-game road trip Monday night at Syracuse, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00. Jake Arrieta (3-1) and his International League leading 1.50 ERA is scheduled to take the mound for the Tides against Chiefs southpaw Chuck James (2-0, 4.85).
