Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- A key Toledo error in the bottom of the fifth led to a three-run Indianapolis Indians (25-11) scoring rally that ultimately proved to be the difference as four Tribe hurlers combined to hold the Mud Hens (10-26) scoreless over the final eight innings in a 4-3 victory on Friday night at Victory Field. The win was the Indians third straight overall and seventh in a row at home.
Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, 2B Ivan DeJesus lined a one-out double to bring CF Alex Presley to the plate. The Tribe center fielder then rolled what looked to be a routine grounder to 2B Brandon Douglas, who misplayed the ball allowing Presley to reach and DeJesus move up to third.
This miscue opened the door for an Indians' scoring barrage as SS Josh Harrison followed with a base hit to right that plated DeJesus and cut the Toledo lead to 3-2. LF Felix Pie then hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Presley to come plateward and even the score at 3-3.
With two-down, Pie took to the basepaths to push the Indians ahead, as the speedster swiped second and forced a throwing error on the steal attempt that moved him up to third. 3B Jared Goedert then stepped in and got the job done with a line-drive single to center that plated Pie and gave the Tribe a 4-3 advantage they would not relinquish.
The Mud Hens jumped ahead early with three tallies in the first inning. SS Gustavo Nunez led off the game with a base hit to left, stole second and eventually came home on a two-out base hit off the bat of LF Nick Castellanos.
RF Danny Dorn, who has collected seven of his 23 hits against the Indians this season, continued to torment Tribe pitching, as he followed Castellanos' single with a two-run double to right to extend the Mud Hens advantage to 3-0. The three scores, however, were all that Toledo could muster, as four Indianapolis hurlers combined to hold the Mud Hens to no runs on just two hits over the final eight frames.
After surrendering the three first-frame scores, Indianapolis starter Brooks Brown (4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) settled down and tossed 3.0 scoreless innings following the first. RHP Tim Alderson (2.2 IP, 2 BB, 2 SO) then tossed 2.2 hitless frames to earn his second win in as many appearances with the Indians, before RHP Ryan Reid (1.1 IP, 1 SO) threw 1.1 perfect innings to notch his fourth hold and RHP Jared Hughes (1.0 IP, 2 BB, 1 SO) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save.
Toledo starter Shawn Hill (4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) set down the first eight Tribe batters in order, before eventually surrendering four runs (two earned) over 4.2 frames to suffer the loss and drop to 0-4 on the season. The Mud Hens bullpen turned in an impressive performance in a losing effort as RHP Evan Reed (2.1 IP, 2 BB, 3 SO) and RHP Bruce Rondon (1.0 IP, 1 SO) combined for 3.1 hitless innings of relief.
The Indians and Mud Hens now continue their series with a 7:05 p.m. contest on Saturday night. International League strikeout leader Andy Oliver (2-1, 2.82) is expected to take the mound for Indianapolis, while Toledo is scheduled to counter with RHP Derek Hankins (0-1, 3.46)
The contest will be televised on HTSN, Hometown Sports and News, available via cable or over-the-air on digital channel 6.2. The game will also be carried on WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
