LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - The Indianapolis Indians had a four-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday evening when the Gwinnett Braves took the series opener, 11-2. Gwinnett has now won six games in a row.
The Braves (47-56) started the scoring early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Former Tribe outfielder Mel Rojas Jr. doubled home Reid Brignac to put Gwinnett on the board, and he later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Hector Olivera.
After Gwinnett pushed across three runs in the second, they added three more in the third. Emilio Bonifacio provided the big hit of the frame with a two-run single to center field. Bonifacio had singled home a run with a hit in the second inning as well.
Jacob Stallings drew a bases-loaded walk to put Indianapolis (53-51) on the board, but an inside the park home run by Sean Kazmar Jr. in the sixth expanded the Braves lead to 11-1.
Danny Ortiz entered the game in a double switch, and he clubbed his 12th home run of the season in his first at-bat. It cut the lead to 11-2, but it proved to the game's final score.
Gwinnett starter Chris Ellis (2-4) picked up the win, but he walked five batters and lasted just five frames.
Trevor Williams (6-5) entered the game with a 0.32 earned run average in the month of July, but he conceded eight runs (three earned) to receive the loss.
The Indians will look to even the series up on Wednesday evening, first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The team returns to Victory Field on Friday night for a weekend series against the Norfolk Tides.
