Charlotte Independence News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC (June 5, 2015) - The Charlotte Independence today announced four roster transactions in advance of Sunday's game in Richmond. The USL expansion club has signed defender Jonny Campbell, released defender Francisco Cordoba, signed goalkeeper Jacob Lissek to an amateur contract (pending US Soccer approval) and received on loan goalkeeper Michael Lisch from MLS side Houston Dynamo.
Campbell joins the Independence roster after spending the previous season with the Philadelphia Fury of the American Soccer League (ASL). He is a 2013 East Tennessee State University graduate. During his senior season, Campbell lead ETSU with five assists and finished his collegiate career ranking ninth in school history for assists. He started 18 games as an outside back in 2013, helping the Bucs record an Atlantic Sun record 10 shutouts end route to advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
Cordoba made one USL appearance for the Independence, recording 19 minutes and two fouls. He has opted to pursue other opportunities back in his home country of Colombia. Prior to signing with Charlotte, Cordoba was playing for Club Deportivo La Equidad Saguaros SA.
Following the transfer of Diego Restrepo earlier in the week and an injury to John Berner against the Carolina RailHawks during the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, the Independence needed to address its goalkeeper situation.
Lissek is a 2013 graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he finished his career as the program's all-time leader in shutouts (26) and with the sixth-most saves in Knights' history (255). The goalkeeper also competed for the United States in the 2013 World Maccabiah Games, winning a Gold Medal in the Men's Open division.
Lisch arrives in Charlotte on temporary loan from the Dynamo, where he was a third-round selection in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. While he did not play for Houston that season, Lisch made 17 appearances for USL side Pittsburgh Riverhounds, recording four shutouts and a 7-6-3 record.
The Independence (2-3-3) return to action on Sunday, June 7, with a match against the Richmond Kickers (5-2-4). This will be the third of four meetings between the two clubs this season. The Kickers won the first match in Richmond 3-0, while the Independence won the second match in Charlotte by the same margin. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00pm at City Stadium in Richmond. Fans can watch the match live on YouTube.
