Charlotte Independence News Release
Matthews (NC) - The Charlotte Independence wrapped up the 2019 season with a 3-1 victory over playoff-bound Ottawa Fury FC on Saturday night at the Sportsplex at Matthews. Enzo Martinez's second brace in the last four games lead the Independence to their fourth straight win.
On a night when the fall rain persisted from the beginning to end, the Independence jumped out to an early lead as team-leading goal scorer Dominic Oduro netted his eight of the season by way of a highlight assist from Niki Jackson.
Following the halftime break, Ottawa would respond with an equalizing goal from substitute Hadji Barry. However, Ottawa midfielder Dakota Barnathan would see yellow cards on successive plays, reducing the away side to finish the match with 10 men.
The Independence took opportunity of the man-advantage as Enzo Martinez put a capper of the 2019 season with goals from Abdoulie Mansally and Valentin Sabella in the 88th minute and 94th minute, respectively.
The Independence will return to USL Championship play at the Sportsplex at Matthews for the 2020 next spring. Slated for completion in 2021, the Independence will begin play in their new home stadium at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Uptown Charlotte.
