CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Independence today officially announced the signing of 24-year-old goalkeeper Kyle Renfro. He is the sixth new player, and second goalkeeper, to reach agreement with the Independence this offseason and brings the current roster of contracted players to 12.

Renfro spent the 2015 USL season with the Harrisburg City Islanders. He made his debut for the Islanders in the third round of the 2015 U.S. Open Cup against the Rochester Rhinos. Renfro maintained the shutout until extra time, when the Islanders fell 3-1. He also appeared in one regular-season game, playing 45 minutes and allowing one goal in an eventual 5-1 loss to Louisville City FC. The goalkeeper began his professional career with the Charlotte Eagles in 2014, making five appearances in the club's final USL season.

"We are excited to welcome Kyle back to Charlotte and have him strengthen our goalkeeping group," said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "His work ethic and positive mentality mesh with our philosophy and will help push our team. More importantly, he is a quality shot stopper capable of making top class saves and gets off his line quickly to prevent opportunities. We are fortunate to be able to add a goalkeeper with Kyle's experience and qualities to our team."

A native of Forest, Va., Renfro played four years of collegiate soccer at Virginia Tech and was invited to compete in the 2014 MLS Combine after a standout senior season. Renfro started all 17 games for the Hokies in 2013, recording 1642 minutes and a 1.26 goals against average. The performance earned him First Team All-State honors and Second Team All-Region honors. Renfro also became only the second Hokie to garner First Team All-ACC honors after leading the conference in saves for three-straight years. He tallied 88 saves during his senior campaign, 100 saves during his junior season and 98 saves as a sophomore. Renfro ranks third all-time in career saves (305) and career shutouts (14) at Virginia Tech.

The Independence will open the 2016 season against Louisville City FC at Ramblewood Stadium on Saturday, March 26. Kickoff is schedule for 7:00pm ET. Tickets are available online at www.charlotteindependence.com/tickets or by phone at 704-206-1515.
