D.C. United News Release

Rochester, NY – Hugo Belanger posted three goals and three assists in a 16-2 win by Canada over Sweden on Monday night that clinched a berth in the medal round of the eighth annual Federation International de Roller Sports (FIRS) Men's World Championships for the team at the ESL Sports Centre in Rochester. Belanger is leading the tournament in scoring through seven games with 28 points on 13 goals and 15 assists. The left wing is the all-time leading scorer of the Adirondack IceHawks and two-time defending United Hockey League (UHL) Most Valuable Player.

Team Canada advances to the tournament's medal round along with Team USA, France, and the Czech Republic. Each of the four finalists complete their regular schedule with a game tonight. Team USA, the winner of six of the seven previous World Championships, currently owns the tournament's best record with a 6-0-1 mark. Canada ranks second in the standings with a record of 6-1-0 with their only loss coming at the hands of Team USA. France (5-1-1) and the Czech Republic (5-2-0) reside in third and fourth place respectively heading into tonight's regular schedule finales. Team Canada will face Mexico at 9:00 tonight in the last game of the regular schedule.

Semifinal games will be played at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bronze Medal Game will be played on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by the Gold and Silver Medal Game at 9:00 p.m.

Defenseman Garry Gulash, who the IceHawks acquired in a trade in March, has 15 assists for Team Canada to share the tournament lead with Belanger and leads the squad in penalty minutes with 16.

Belanger's roller hockey credentials include being a member of Team Canada's 1998 Gold Medal-winning World Championship club and he is the all-time leading scorer of the now defunct Roller Hockey International (RHI).

Belanger, who re-signed with the IceHawks on May 28th, will begin his third season with Adirondack when the club opens the 2002-2003 season against the Quad City Mallards on October 11th at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Season seats for the upcoming campaign are on sale now. Adult season seats are available for just $382 and student and senior (age 55 and over) seats are on sale for $306. Please contact the IceHawks office at (518) 926-PUCK to reserve your seats or for more information.
