MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact announced on Wednesday the acquisition of Honduran international winger and forward Romell Quioto from the Houston Dynamo, in exchange of Argentine defender Victor Cabrera and $100,000 in General Allocation Money.
He holds his American green card and will not count as an international player.
"We are pleased to acquire this versatile player, who can play in every attacking position and who has proven in the past that he can be successful in this league," said sporting director Olivier Renard. "We want to thank Victor for his five years of service with the club. We can only wish him the best for his next chapter."
Quioto, 28, spent the last three seasons in MLS with the Houston Dynamo, recording 15 goals and 17 assists in 72 regular season games, including 47 starts, and 4,327 minutes.
In 2018, he finished second on the team with 12 assists and third with six goals. He appeared in four MLS Cup playoff games in 2017 and won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2018. He had joined the Dynamo on December 23, 2016.
A native of Rio Esteban Colón, Honduras, he previously played three seasons and a half with CD Olimpia in Liga Nacional, winning the Clausura tournament (spring) in 2014, 2015 and 2016. He started his professional career with C.D. Vida in 2009-10, also in the Honduran first division. He also played on loan with Polish first division club Wisla Krakow, in the Ekstraklasa, in 2012.
He has played 14 games in the Concacaf Champions League throughout his career, with CD Olimpia and Houston.
At the international level, Quioto has scored eight goals in 47 games with the Honduran national team. He made his senior debut on March 1, 2012, in a friendly game against Ecuador. He has appeared in the last three Concacaf Gold Cup tournaments, in 2015, 2017 and 2019, while also playing several FIFA World Cup qualification games. He also took part in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, in Brazil, scoring one goal in six games.
Victor Cabrera is leaving the Impact following five seasons in Montreal, tying for fifth in MLS club history with 93 games played and sixth with 82 starts and 7,249 regular season minutes. He also started eight MLS Cup playoff games with the club. He helped the Impact reach the Concacaf Champions League final in 2014-15 and win the Canadian Championship in 2019.
