IceGators edge Ice Pilots 2-1

Lafayette LA. Playing the 2nd game of a home and home series, the IceGators and Ice Pilots hooked up in a wild, penalty filled game with the IceGators winning 2-1. The home team used two power play goals to end the Ice Pilots winning streak at 5.

Pensacola took a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of play as Tyler Beechey's wrist shot from the slot accounted for the only goal of the period. It was his 10th of the year and came at at the 8:45 mark. Things got wild later in the period as a series of battles led to 3 altercations and 2 game misconducts. The biggest of the fights involved the Gators Shawn Skiehar and Pilots Cam Keith, brawling on the Louisiana bench, resulting in game misconducts for both. Total penalty minutes for the period were 38 minutes for Pensacola and 30 for Louisiana.

The Gators tied the game at 1-1 after 40 minutes when Jake Ortmeyer snapped a one timer from the slot past Frederic Cloutier on a 4 on 3 power play at 1:41. It was Ortmeyer's 4th goal of the season, Max Fortunus and Roger Leonard getting the assists on the only goal of the period.

The game winning goal happened at the 9:57 mark of the 3rd period, as Wes Mason jumped on a Pensacola turnover and lifted a wrist shot high past Cloutier for a 2-1 lead. It was Mason's 14th goal of the year, 7th power play tally and marks the 5th straight home game he has lit the red light. Down the stretch the Gators weathered two Ice Pilots power plays, including 1:10 of 5 on 3 time. With the win, Louisiana ups the record to 12-9-3 (27 points) and 4th place in the South Division. Louisiana out shot Pensacola 29-25 and dominated special teams, going 2-7 on the man advantage, while killing all 8 Ice Pilots power plays.

Coming Up- The IceGators last game before the Christmas break will be Tuesday night, December 21 when the Gators host the Charlotte Checkers at 7:05pm. Louisiana will be looking to avenge a 3-2 loss at Charlotte on December 8. As part of the night we will have special holiday surprises including a visit from Santa and a holiday post game skate with the players.
