Underhill And Sea Wolves Shutout Aces 3-0
December 19, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Mississippi goaltender Matt Underhill turned aside all 30 shots to backstop the Sea Wolves to a 3-0 victory over the Alaska Aces before 4,485 fans at Sullivan Arena.
With the win, the Sea Wolves extend their win streak to a season-high four and get above the .500 mark for the first time since October 31, improving to 11-10-2 for 24 points. Mississippi runs its record on the road trip to 4-1-0, which wraps up tomorrow at Anchorage.
The Aces are now winless in their last three games.
"We're starting to play to our potential," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "The guys are getting the job done and they are having fun. I hope we don't start to get complacent. Our job is not done in Alaska."
After a scoreless first period, Mississippi opened the score at the 3:17 mark of the second. Jay Legault extended his point streak to six games by notching his fourth of the season on a hard wrist shot that he tucked underneath the crossbar beating Lance Mayes. Travis Lisabeth and Kerry Ellis-Toddington collected assists.
The best chance for Alaska (12-11-2, 26 points) came midway through the stanza. Joe Talbot let go with a quick shot in front, but Underhill, who turned away all 17 shots through two periods, made a terrific save.
The Sea Wolves went up 2-0 on a goal from an unlikely source. Defenseman Chris Cava floated a shot from the blueline through a maze of legs and into the back of the net for his first of the year. The unassisted goal for Cava at 13:30 was his first since February 14, 2004.
Mississippi scored its third goal of the period. Anthony Battaglia slid a backhander underneath Mayes for a power-play goal at 16:41. Battaglia's eighth of the campaign was assisted by Nicolas Corbeil and Ellis-Toddington.
In the third, Underhill continued to shine in the Sea Wolves net stopping 13 Alaska shots in the third period to collect his first shutout of the season and second of his professional career.
Mississippi scored one power-play goal on five chances, while Alaska was unsuccessful on five man advantages. Aces outshot the Sea Wolves 30-19.
