IceDogs Lose to Owen Sound in Overtime

October 29, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs hit the road on Saturday night to take on the Owen Sound Attack at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre for their third of three games this weekend. The importance of proper rest and nutrition would prove to be vital for the IceDogs as they looked to collect points in their third straight game and finish the weekend on a positive note.

As effective as the young core has been for the IceDogs in the early part of this season, the impact of the veterans is evident in the form of timely offense when the team needs it. In particular, Johnny Corneil has taken a step forward this season in that department. Corneil opened the scoring at 4:00 of the first period to give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead on a back-door tap in from Hayden Davis and Ben Jones. The IceDogs penalty kill was a perfect 3 for 3 in the opening frame as they maintained a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The second period offered steady forechecking from both teams, leading to an abundance of neutral zone puck-possession and little offensive chances on both ends of the ice. As a result, the middle frame remained scoreless for the first 19 minutes. However, with 19 seconds remaining, Owen Sound managed to put one past Dhillon to make it a 1-1 tie heading into the third period.

The tight-checking approach continued into the third with both goaltenders making ridiculous saves to keep their respective teams alive. 60 minutes solved nothing as this game needed overtime to decide the winner. Stephen Dhillon had a night to remember, finishing with 53 saves. Ultimately, the IceDogs came up just short, losing 2-1 on a late overtime goal.
