Ottawa 67's News Release
OTTAWA - The first home win of the season saw the Ottawa 67's answering a tough test. They beat the second-place Hamilton Bulldogs 5-4, exploding for three unanswered goals in the latter half of the game.
"Our guys played hard and found a way to win," said 67's head coach and GM Jeff Brown after the game. "We're pretty excited about the way our guys battled and found a way."
Brown said it's "huge" to establish momentum against good teams, with the 67's logging back-to-back wins against formidable opponents in Hamilton and Sudbury.
Ottawa came out flying once again, scoring the first goal of the game just four minutes in. A centering pass from behind the net by Kody Clark found Travis Barron wide open in the slot. The 67's captain deposited it for a 1-0 67's lead.
It wouldn't be Barron's last contribution in the first period, picking up a secondary assist on Artur Tyanulin's goal. He dug the puck through the wickets of Bulldogs starter Kaden Fulcher in a mad scramble. That made the score 2-0 at 11:33.
Hamilton would answer before the end of the period. Less than three minutes after Tyanulin's marker, blue liner Justin Lemcke cannoned a slapper top shelf past Ottawa starting goalie Leo Lazarev.
In the second, Hamilton got a spark when Matt Luff was hauled down on a break, drawing a penalty shot. Luff scored, tying the game.
The Bulldogs then took a 3-2 lead just 16 seconds later.
Despite the adversity, Ottawa's third period effort would put them over the top.
At 12:07, Drake Rymsha picked up a loose puck and turned on the jets. He drove past Lemcke and fed Noel Hoefenmayer for the sophomore defenceman's fourth goal of the season, tying the game 3-3.
Then veteran Patrick White cleaned up the garbage on a Jared Steege shot, poking home the rebound and giving the 67's the lead back.
Both teams added another goal, and Ottawa thwarted a late push from the Bulldogs for a 5-4 final.
Ottawa pulled off the win without three of their dependable rookies. Peter Stratis, Kevin Bahl and Carter Robinson were all scratched to play in the World U17 Hockey Championship for Canada.
Ottawa returns to action Sunday afternoon, in a special Halloween-themed game against the Flint Firebirds.
