Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs battled back from a 4-1 deficit to pull within one, but could not complete the comeback as they would ultimately fall by a score of 6-3 to the Petes Tuesday night in Peterborough.
It would be Peterborough that would open the scoring, making it 1-0 6:55 in. The IceDogs would bounce right back however as Brendan Perlini would finish off a two-on-one with a nice move in front to make it 1-1 just 2:55 later. Unfortunately for the IceDogs the Petes would retake the lead with just over five minutes remaining in the period and then add a shorthanded goal with just 12 seconds left in the first to send the 'Dogs into the intermission down 3-1. Shots after one favoured Peterborough 18-14.
The second would see the score remain 3-1 for much of the frame. However, late in the period, the IceDogs would find themselves on a 5-on-3 penalty kill and they would be able to kill off the first penalty, but not the second as Peterborough would score on the powerplay with 36 seconds remaining in the second to make it 4-1 after 40. Shots through two periods were 34-25 Peterborough.
The IceDogs would not let up in the third and would look to close the gap, which they would begin to do with 8:57 remaining as Anthony DiFruscia would tip home a Carter Verhaeghe shot on the powerplay to make it 4-2. They would not stop there as just 1:15 later Jordan Maletta would tip in an Eric Ming shot to make it a 4-3 game with 7:42 remaining. It was unfortunately not meant to be as Peterborough would ultimately score twice more, the second in the empty net, to make it a 6-3 final. Final shots favoured the home side 42-40.
The IceDogs will now return home to St. Catharines where they will play host to the Mississauga Steelheads in an extremely important first game of a home and home Thursday. The game will also be St. Catharines Fincups heritage night with as many as ten former St. Catharines Fincups expected to be in attendance.
