IceDogs Edged 6-5 in Fast-Paced Thriller with Sting

December 3, 2010 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs were edged by the Sarnia Sting in a thrilling 6-5 battle at the RBC Centre in Sarnia Friday night. Ryan Strome had his second multi-goal game in a row, while Steven Shipley, Dylan MacEachern and Freddie Hamilton added markers to bring the IceDogs within one goal in a tough road loss against the Western Conference opponent.

The Sting opened the scoring at the 2:59 mark as Kale Kerbashian made a nifty backhanded pass right onto the stick of Nick Latta who snapped the puck past John Chartrand to give the Sting a 1-0 lead.

The IceDogs tied the game up at the 10:47 mark of the first when assistant captain Dylan MacEachern potted his second goal in as many games by making a nice read and creating a turnover before firing a laser past Sting goaltender John Cullen to give the game a 1-1 score.

The tie wouldn't last long as Kale Kerbashian notched his 16th goal of the season on a power play just over three minutes later to regain the Sting lead.

Joe Rogalski increased the Sarnia lead to 3-1 at the 19:43 mark on the power play to give them the advantage going into the first intermission.

Ryan Strome also continued his successful weekend with a nifty goal just 3:26 into the second period with the help of Steven Shipley and David Pacan to give the game a 3-2 score.

Sarnia's rookie sensation Nail Yakupov answered right back with a dandy goal of his own to give his team a 4-2 lead.

The scoring frenzy continued in the second as Freddie Hamilton capitalized on a Dougie Hamilton rebound while the 'Dogs had a 5-on-3 advantage, cutting the lead once again to 4-3.

Dougie Hamilton laid a hit on Sting leading scorer Kale Kerbashian, which led to a response from Dean Pawlaczyk who tried to fight Hamilton, earning him an instigator penalty, a fighting major and misconduct, giving the IceDogs a seven minute power play as Dougie Hamilton did not drop his gloves.

Kerbashian takes his second power play goal of the night (fourth point) at the 16:01 mark of the second frame, increasing the Sarnia lead to 5-3.

Steven Shipley then replied at the 17:15 mark on the power play to keep the goal flurry going, giving the game a score of 5-4 after 40 minutes of play.

The penalty trouble continued for the IceDogs in the third period and Brett Ritchie converted on the power play at the 8:15 mark to boost the Sting's lead to 6-4.

IceDogs rookie defenseman Luke Mercer then made a brilliant pass to Ryan Strome, who picked up his 15th goal of the season and his second two-goal game in a row as he scored the last two goals in the 'Dogs 5-3 win over the Windsor Spitfires last night.

Niagara pulled goaltender John Chartrand late in the third in efforts to tie the game, and with just mere seconds left in the third the 'Dogs put the puck past Sting goalie John Cullen, but after video review, it was determined no goal, and Sarnia took a 6-5 victory over the IceDogs at home.

The IceDogs will return to action tomorrow night as they play host to the Kitchener Rangers at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the IceDogs box office at the Gatorade Garden City Complex beginning at 5 p.m.
