Otters Upset Rangers 2-1

Phil Varone scored the game-winning goal in overtime play to give the Erie Otters a 2-1 win over the Kitchener Rangers.

Matt Tipoff scored the lone goal of the first period on a Rangers power play at 6:27 to take a 1-0 lead over the Otters.

Erie's Phil Varone buried a rolling puck past Rangers netminder Brandon Maxwell to tie the score 1-1 with just 1:10 left in the second period.

The game was pushed into overtime after a scoreless third period.

Varone capitalized on an Erie power play at the 3:08 mark of the overtime period to give the Otters the win.

Shots on net for the game were even at 35. Brandon Maxwell was strong in net for the Rangers and was named the second star of the game.

The Rangers travel to Niagara on Saturday, December 4th to face the IceDogs at 7:00pm. They return to home ice on Tuesday, December 7th to host the Guelph Storm for the 16th annual Rangers Teddy Bear Toss. Game time is 7:30 pm.

Fans attending the game are asked to bring a new or good, used teddy bear to the game and immediately following the Rangers first goal, they throw their teddy bears onto the ice surface. The bears will then be turned over to local charitable organizations just in time for Christmas. If possible, please wrap bears in a clear plastic bag.
