Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
London, ON- JP Anderson turned aside 30 shots and Devante Smith-Pelly added a pair of goals to lead the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors past the London Knights 4-1 tonight at the John Labatt Centre. The win improves the Majors winning streak to ten straight and sees their record now stand at 24-2-0-1 on the season.
The Majors were never in doubt over the course of the game thanks to some key saves from JP Anderson and strong defensive play in a fairly clean game that only saw four penalties in total. Devante Smith-Pelly opened the scoring at 7:49 of the first period after tipping in a pass from Casey Cizikas over the glove of Igor Bobkov to put the Majors ahead 1-0. With just over a minute remaining in the opening period Rob Flick forced a turnover at the Knights blueline which proved costly for London as Flick scored after putting the puck low to beat Bobkov and increase the Majors lead to 2-0 and Mississauga held the advantage after twenty minutes.
Smith-Pelly scored his second goal of the period at 7:41 of the second period to increase the Majors lead to 3-0. Neither team could capitalize on their power play opportunities in the second period and the 3-0 scoreline held after forty minutes. The Knights were on the power play just past the midway point of the third when Stephen Sanza scored to pull London to within two of Mississauga. Sanza carried the puck into the Majors zone and fired his wrister past Anderson from just before the faceoff dot to cut the lead to 3-1 for Mississauga. The crowd was quickly silenced as the Majors responded under a minute later courtesy of Casey Cizikas. The Majors forced a turnover in the Knights zone and Justin Shugg made a quick centering pass to Cizikas who beat Bobkov to make it 4-1 and that's how this one would finish. JP Anderson made 30 saves to earn the game's "First Star" honours and his seventeenth win of the season. Igor Bobkov stopped 31 of the 35 shots he faced in a losing effort for London.
The Majors have one game remaining this weekend which will be on Sunday when they travel to Guelph to face the Storm at 2:00 p.m. 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup ticket packages are on sale. To be part of the action contact the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1.
