Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs cruised to a big 9-3 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs in front of a sell-out crowd of 3,145 at the Gatorade Garden City Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The first period saw Alex Friesen open the scoring just 1:26 in, beating Kingston starter Igor Bobkov. The Frontenacs would tie the game just over 30 seconds later, but the IceDogs would take over from there, as Friesen would score again, followed by goals from Dougie Hamilton, Joel Wigle, Ryan Strome, and Dougie Hamilton again to make it 6-1 less than ten minutes in. Kingston would strike once more late to make it 6-2 after a wild opening period. Shots in the period were 21-13 in favour of the IceDogs.
The second period would see the scoring settle down a little bit, but not much, as the teams combined for another four goals. Freddie Hamilton and Wigle would each score to stretch the IceDogs lead to 8-2, before Kingston closed the score back to 8-3. Brett Ritchie would then restore the IceDogs lead to six making it 9-3 after 40 minutes. Shots after two periods were 40-22 for Niagara.
The third period would prove to be uneventful as both teams were held scoreless to make it a 9-3 final. Final shots in game were 54-27, as Christopher Festarini made 24 saves for the win.
With the win and Ottawa's loss to London, the IceDogs have once again taken sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference with nine games remaining.
The IceDogs will next return to action Thursday night, March 1st when they host the Saginaw Spirit in their only visit of the season to Niagara.
