Maxwell Leads Majors with Shutout

February 26, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

If Brandon Maxwell doesn't earn the Ontario Hockey League's Player of the Week honours, well somebody else must have had one heck of a week.

Maxwell made 37 saves for the shutout and Andrew Goldberg scored his first two OHL goals to lead the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors to their fourth straight victory, a 6-0 win over the Erie Otters on South Asian Day Sunday afternoon at the Hershey Centre.

The Majors goalie appeared in three games this weekend - all wins - and stopped 121 of the 124 shots he faced for a save percentage of .976. But Maxwell gave credit to his teammates for helping the Majors solidify their hold on sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

"Goaltending is a team oriented position and our team played unreal this weekend," Maxwell said. "They made me look good out there and that makes me feel good."

The Majors were badly out-shot in wins over Niagara Friday night at the Hershey Centre and Saturday in Barrie, but out-shot the Otters 46-37 on Sunday. But Maxwell says it's not the shots that matter.

"We don't give up many scoring chances when we are playing Mississauga Majors style hockey and that's what makes us successful," Maxwell said. "We can play with anybody when we stick to our game plan.

"It was huge to get the six points this weekend."

Sergey Kuptsov, Spenser Cobbold, Scott Teskey and Trevor Carrick scored the other goals for the Majors, who now have 63 points, three up on seventh place Oshawa and four on both Belleville and Peterborough thanks to the three wins this weekend.

"In all three games we had good physical play between the whistles without taking penalties," Mississauga General Manager/Coach Manager James Boyd said. "Maxwell was outstanding and it was a terrific weekend for us all round."

After a scoreless first period in which the Majors out-shot the Otters 15-7, Goldberg then went to work. He scored his first OHL goal at 6:42 of the second period and his second seven minutes later to give the Majors a 2-0 lead.

Teskey was credited with his sixth goal of the season at 14:54 of the second when the Otters scored on their own net, leaving the Majors up 3-0 after 40 minutes with a 32-16 shots advantage.

Mississauga scored three more goals in the third to seal the win, with Carrick scoring his fourth at 6:22, Kuptsov his 12th at 9:07 and Cobbold his fourth at 15:12 to complete the scoring.

Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play before 2,608 fans at the Hershey Centre.

The Majors host the Belleville Bulls Friday at 7:30 p.m. in their next game at the Hershey Centre. You can purchase tickets for Majors home games at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Majors box office during regular business hours. Majors are in Brampton next Sunday.
