IceCats Left Winger Recalled

WORCESTER, MA - St. Louis Blues Senior Vice President and General Manager Larry Pleau today recalled left wing Sergei Varlamov from the Worcester IceCats of the American Hockey League (AHL). Varlamov's recall to the National Hockey League (NHL) is under emergency conditions.

Varlamov is the IceCats leading scorer this season, having collected 59 points in 66 games. He is also tops on the club in assists with 36 and goals, registering a team-high 10 of the 23 total on the power play. The 24-year old native of Kiev, Ukraine will be making his second stop of the season with the Blues. He participated in one game with St. Louis on November 20th against Columbus and did not register a point.

Varlamov spent the entire 2001-2002 campaign with the Blues, harvesting five goals and seven assists in 52 games: 52(5/7/12). Prior to that, he was in the Calgary system and won the 2001 Calder Cup with the Flames of the AHL. Varlamov was acquired by the Blues from Calgary on June 23, 2001, and was originally signed by the Flames as a free agent on September 18, 1996.

This season, Varlamov represented the IceCats at the 2003 AHL All-Star Classic and notched an assist in the game. He departs Massachusetts one day after defenseman Matt Walker and Eric Nickulas. The two were also called up by the Blues from Worcester under emergency conditions.

The IceCats are in Manchester on Friday and Portland on Saturday. They return to Worcester on Sunday for a 4:05 PM faceoff with the Monarchs. The 'Cats, who have qualified for the post season, only have four regular season home games remaining. Tickets for those games are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, including the Box Office at Worcester's Centrum Centre.
