Capitals Recall Boumedienne

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates announced today that their NHL affiliate, the Washington Capitals, has recalled defenseman Josef Boumedienne. He is expected to join the Capitals tonight for their game in Montreal at 7:30 p.m.

This is Boumedienne's first recall to Washington. He was acquired from the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Dean Melanson on December 16, 2002. He has played in 44 games with the Pirates, totaling eight goals and 22 assists for 30 points. For the season, he has ten goals and 37 assists for 47 points in 70 games with both the Pirates and the Binghamton Senators. The native of Stockholm, Sweden leads all Pirates' defenseman in scoring and is tied for third in scoring among all AHL defensemen. His 37 assists rank third among AHL blueliners as well. Boumedienne also has a Pirates' team-high 139 penalty minutes.

Boumedienne is originally the New Jersey Devils' seventh choice, 91st overall, in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He has four previous games of NHL experience, one with New Jersey and three with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Pirates are back in action on Thursday when they visit Lowell. They'll host the Worcester IceCats on Saturday, March 29 at 7:05 p.m. and the Saint John Flames on Sunday, March 30 at 5:05 p.m. Tickets for all remaining regular season home games are on sale at the Civic Center box office and all Ticketmaster outlets.
