IceCaps Make Significant Donation to Special Olympics

St. John's IceCaps News Release
For the second year in a row the St. John's IceCaps have donated $20,000 to Special Olympics, Newfoundland and Labrador and will serve as headline sponsor of the Special Olympics Festival, the charity's primary fundraiser.
The IceCaps' financial contribution is made through the IceCaps Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the American Hockey League club. In partnership with the Williams Family Foundation, IceCaps Care has provided nearly $1 million in financial donations and in-kind donations to charitable organizations, province-wide, over the past two seasons.
"Special Olympians embody the true essence of sport through fair play, fitness and the thrill of competition," said Danny Williams, President and CEO of the St. John's IceCaps. "We have recently seen a Special Olympian from this province win gold and silver medals at the World Winter Games, and we take pride in how these athletes represent this province abroad. It is important that we support them in their hard work."
Festival chair Judy Dobbin points out this funding enables Special Olympics to provide athletes throughout the province an opportunity to develop self-confidence through athletics.
"The tremendous support we receive from IceCaps Care allows Special Olympics to provide quality sports programming to over 600 athletes in fourteen community based clubs." said Dobbin. "Through Special Olympics, they begin to see themselves differently. Whether by stepping onto the ice or onto the snow shoe track, they now see themselves as athletes who can do so much more."
The IceCaps will present the cheque at the Special Olympics Festival breakfast which starts 10:30 Saturday morning at Clovelly Golf Course. The Festival is a full day of events that continues into the afternoon with an open house concert, followed by an evening of parties and music that goes late into the night.
