IceCaps Fall to Phantoms
December 19, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps saw their two-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Adirondack Phantoms Wednesday night at Glens Falls Civic Center.
Brayden Schenn scored the winner in the third period while Sean Couturier added a pair of assists. Scott Munroe picked up the win, making 23 saves.
Eddie Pasquale took the loss, stopping 31 shots. Spencer Machacek and Zach Redmond both scored for St. John's, while Kael Mouillierat notched two assists.
Adirondack opened the scoring on a power play at 6:25 of the first on a goal by Brandon Manning after Derek Meech took an interference penalty. Manning took a shot from the point that went through the legs of a screened Pasquale to put the home side up 1-0.
With no further scoring in the first, St. John's tied things up on the power play at 7:18 of the second period. During a delayed penalty call that would have resulted in a 5-on-3 man advantage, St. John's controlled the puck and converted. Mouillierat found Meech by the right faceoff circle, who sent a pass cross-ice to a wide-open Machacek, who one-timed his seventh past Munroe to knot the score at one.
The Phantoms retook the lead a few minutes later on a beautiful goal by Eric Wellwood. Wellwood took a nice pass from Jeff Dimmen in stride and burst in over the IceCaps blueline on the right side before making a nice move to cut to the net and lift a wrist shot past Pasquale on the short side for a 2-1 Adirondack lead.
However, the IceCaps battled back once again and evened the score late in the frame. Just after a penalty to Mouillierat expired, Jason Jaffray took a shot from the left circle and was denied by Munroe but Zach Redmond jumped up into the play and found the loose puck, shovelling it home to tie the score at two apiece.
Adirondack forged ahead at 5:16 of the third on a broken play that was finished off by Schenn. Dean Arsene gloved a puck down but was unable to corral it and Schenn took control, skating over the IceCaps blueline and rifling a wrist shot over Pasquale's shoulder to give his team a 3-2 advantage.
St. John's continues its five-game pre-Christmas road trip Friday in Hamilton for their third matchup with the Bulldogs this season.
