Ice Park At Clipper Magazine Satdium To Host Third-Annual Food Drive

LANCASTER, Pa.-Hunger is the target of an annual charity effort at the Ice Park at Clipper Magazine Stadium, presented by Lancaster County Motors Hyundai/Subaru. The park today announced the dates for its third-annual "Freeze Out Hunger" food drive.

The program continues a tradition of charitable efforts connected with the Ice Park, which have also benefited Toys for Tots, educational initiatives and local charities.

The "Freeze Out Hunger" food drive will take place during Presidents' Day weekend, Feb. 13-16. The Ice Park will be open special holiday hours (noon to 6 p.m.) on Presidents' Day, Feb. 16. Every skater who brings two or more cans of food to the Ice Park will receive $3 off admission all weekend long. On Sunday, when children 12 and under are regularly $3, kids who bring non-perishable food items will skate for free (skate rental not included).

The "Freeze Out Hunger" food drive is a partnership with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, and the majority of collections will go directly to needy families in Lancaster County. Skaters have donated more than 2,000 boxes and cans of food in the first two years of the program at the Ice Park.

"We know times are tough right now, and that's putting added pressure on service organizations like the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank," Barnstormers general manager Vince Bulik said. "We're asking everyone-including non-skaters-to help this year's drive collect more food than before. Now, more than in recent memory, people need our help."

The food bank most needs non-perishable food items such as canned tuna, canned meats and stews, soup, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, packaged meals, packaged pasta and rice, canned and dried beans, pure fruit/vegetable juices and baby food, cereal and formula (must be within code date).

"Our food donations tend to drop off significantly after the holidays, but the demand for assistance does not," said Melissa Etschied, director of communications for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. "This food drive comes at an important time for us."

The Ice Park, which set an attendance record last weekend, is open weekly from 6-10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, noon to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays through March 1. The regular admission price of $6 gives skaters access to the ice until the park closes for the day. Rental skates are available for an additional $3.
