Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

The Pensacola Ice Flyers finished off their 4-game road trip winning their 20th game of the season and improving their record to 20-13-3. It was their 2nd straight game in Huntsville Saturday night. After losing 4-3 in a shootout on Friday, the outcome was reversed as they come out on top this night with a shootout victory, 4-3.

There was a lot of energy in the arena and on the ice right from the opening faceoff. Pensacola was the first to score Friday night, but Huntsville was the first to break the goose egg this night. Ray Ortiz scored 12 minutes in, firing a snap shot past Ice Flyers' goalie, Corey Milan. The first ended with Huntsville leading 1-0.

Last night's contest between these 2 teams saw them alternate goals, and tonight started off no different. Matthew Robertson of the Ice Flyers tied the score up at 1 after taking a feed from Andrew Harrison out of the corner and beating Havoc goalie Kevin Beech. However, before the momentum could shift too much in favor of Pensacola, Huntsville's Justin Fox found the loose puck after it bounced around the slot before finding the back of the Ice Flyers net.

It was then Pensacola's turn to score and they did exactly that. The line of Mike Carter, Jordan Chong and Chris Wilson had chance after chance all night. In a flurry of shots during their shift with a few minutes remaining in the second, Chong finally beat Beech over his shoulder from the right side to tie the game back up at 2. This same line was at it again just over a minute later. Chong won an offensive zone faceoff to Wilson, who then fed it to Ryan Ramage on the point for a one-timer that blew past the Havoc goalie.

After a 3-goal period for Pensacola, they would take a 3-2 lead into the final period 20 minutes, wanting to hang on to the lead for another 2 points.

Huntsville bounced back early in the third when Fox scored his second of the campaign only a couple minutes into the final frame. That would be all the scoring in regulation time, and for the second straight night, Pensacola and Huntsville would not only go into overtime, but into a shootout tied at 3.

The Ice Flyers' first 2 shooters - Shane Ferguson and Andrew Howes - both scored but the last 3 failed to beat Beech in goal. The opposite happened for the Havoc as their first 3 shooters were turned aside by Milan, but their final 2 - Jeff Hazelwood and Stuart Stefan - scored to send the shootout to extra shooters. After the sixth shooters from both sides were stopped, Mike Carter of the Ice Flyers scored thus putting the pressure on the Havoc's Mike MacDonald. Milan stood tall as he stopped MacDonald and then headed over to celebrate a big shootout victory with his teammates.

Pensacola took 7 of the possible 8 points on a road trip that had them traveling nearly 2200 miles in 5 days. They are in sole possession of 4th in the SPHL standings with 43 points, only 4 points back from 3rd place Knoxville, and 6 points back with 3 games in hand from 2nd place Columbus.
