Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

KNOXVILLE, TN. (January 16, 2015) - Despite outshooting the Ice Bears 40 - 26, the Ice Flyers go down 3-1 in Knoxville on Friday night and puts both teams tied for first in the SPHL standings with 38 points.

The stakes were high going into the game as Knoxville stood only two points behind the first place Ice Flyers. A win for the Pensacola would distance them further from the Ice Bears, but a win for Knoxville would put them in a two-way tie with the Ice Flyers at the top of the SPHL.

From the drop of the puck, the environment at the Knoxville Coliseum had a playoff feel to it. The Ice Bears were eager to get on the board first and did so at the 2:24 mark of the first period with a goal by Berkley Scott from Jake Johnson and Ryan Salvis, Pensacola's former captain. It was just nine seconds into a power play on a tripping call to Brett Beebe that the Ice Bears extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Christian Weidauer at the 8:17 mark. The fifteen shots that the Ice Flyers put on net were all turned away by Braely Torris.

Following a scoreless second period, the grinding battle continued into the third period. Pensacola took control and had Knoxville playing on their heels. As time was winding down, a two-handed slash by David Segal sent Adam Pawlick to the ice and sent Segal to the locker room with two minutes for slashing, ten-minute misconduct and a game misconduct. Pensacola would pull goalie Max Strang for the 6-on-4 man advantage with 1:12 remaining in the game.

With thirty seconds left on the clock, the Ice Flyers had finally made it a one-goal game with a power play goal by Nick McParland from Corey Banfield. Still with the man advantage, after Pensacola won control of the puck from the face-off they would bring Strang back to the bench. A deflected shot off of Torris would land on the stick of Brett Valliquette who would send the puck down the length of the ice and into the net to give the Ice Bears the victory with a final score of 3-1.

Both teams meet again at the Knoxville Coliseum tonight at 6:35 p.m. The victor of the matchup will move into first place in the SPHL standings. You can catch all Ice Flyers' away games at Beef O Brady's in downtown Pensacola or 9 mile road. All games are available on SPHLLive.com as well.
