Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

Pensacola, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers travelled to Lafayette, LA. Friday night to take on the Louisiana IceGators and came away with a hard fought win on the road, 4-2. The Ice Flyers improved to 8-3-2 on the season while the IceGators are 7-3-1.

Pensacola took a 3-0 lead but Louisiana fought back with a pair of power play goals. It turned out not to be enough as Ice Flyer Patrick Knowlton scored his second of the game in the empty net with seven seconds left to seal the victory for the Ice Flyers.

The first period was scoreless until a late power play came Pensacola's way. They made short work of it as Tyler Soehner scored not even 20 seconds into the man advantage on a back-door feed from John Dunbar.

Ice Flyers' leading scorer from last season and SPHL Co-Rookie of the Year, Jordan Chong, has been snake-bitten thus far and has not been able to find the back of the net in the first 12 games of the season. Tonight, that all changed for Chong as Ryan Raven sent him in all alone on a breakaway that he capitalized on. Patrick Knowlton would make it 3-0 for Pensacola when he deflected a shot from Raven.

The IceGators started to fight back, beginning with a power play marker by Matt Robertson with a few minutes left in the second. Mark Andre Carre put Louisiana within one with another power play goal with just under nine minutes to play.

Louisiana battled to draw even but Pensacola put up a strong defensive front. IceGators goalie Riley Gill tried numerous times to get to his bench for the extra attacker but the Ice Flyers controlled too much of the play. The IceGators were finally able to have an extra attacker to try to tie the game. However, they soon turned the puck over and Knowlton scored in the empty net for his second of the night, finishing the scoring off at 4-2 for Pensacola.

The Ice Flyers outshot the IceGators 29-23. Pensacola went one for four on the power play and Louisiana went two for four.

Pensacola returns home to play the Knoxville Ice Bears on Tom Thumb Ice at the Pensacola Bay Center on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Louisiana hosts the Mississippi Surge Saturday night and then the Mississippi RiverKings on Sunday afternoon.
