Ice Flyers Get Shot Down in Thunderbolts' Third Period Flurry

Evansville, Ind: Coming in with 10 power play goals in 4 games, the Thunderbolts red-hot power play would keep up its momentum, as Evansville scored three power play goals in the third to take down the Ice Flyers by a 4-1 score Friday night at Ford Center.

Down 1-0 through the first half of the game, the Thunderbolts would surge back in the second period and Dylan Clarke would score on a breakaway to tie the game up with 4:16 left in the period to tie the game. Starting the third period on the power play for 45 seconds, John Scorcia would cash in a between-the-legs pass from Nick Lazorko to break the tie at the 27 second mark, making it 2-1 Evansville, with Frank Schumacher picking up a secondary assist. After a cross checking penalty to Nathan Bruyere, Dave Williams would find the back of the net at the 7:42 mark from Lazorko. And finally, Chase Nieuwendyk from a shot from the point, also on the power play, would make it 4-1 from Clarke and Hunter Stewart at the 11:41 mark. The 4-1 victory along with the Birmingham loss to Knoxville now gets Evansville to within four points out of 12 possible to clinching the first playoff appearance in Thunderbolts' franchise history.

For Evansville, Williams scored a goal and two assists, Clarke finished with a goal and assist, Nieuwendyk and Scorcia picked up a goal each and Lazorko added two assists. Ryan de Melo finished with 17 saves on 18 shots in goal. The Thunderbolts can clinch a playoff spot Saturday against Pensacola with a victory along with another Birmingham loss. Face-off is set for 7:15 p.m. CST at Ford Center.
