Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
Pensacola, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers were back on Tom Thumb Ice at the Pensacola Bay Center Sunday afternoon after winning three straight games on the road to face the Huntsville Havoc. However, the Havoc left Pensacola with a 4-3 overtime win over Ice Flyers.
The Ice Flyers outshot the Havoc 39-37. Goalie Dan McWhinney of the Havoc had 36 saves on the night, while Steve Christie of the Ice Flyers made 33 saves. Huntsville did not score on three power play chances, and Pensacola scored once in five opportunities.
The first period started out with the Huntsville Havoc's defenseman Sam Cannata scoring the game's first goal. The Ice Flyers matched the Havoc's goal when John Dunbar capitalized on the power play. Huntsville's Mike MacDonald beat Christie to put his team ahead by one with six minutes left in the first. A few minutes later, the Ice Flyers defenseman Gabriel Boutin-Gagnon fired the puck from the blue line to tie the game at two.
The second frame started out with hard hitting and consistent battles for the puck. With less than a minute left on the clock in the second, Havoc Ian Boots broke the tie with a shot that beat Christie.
Down by one goal, the Ice Flyers battled to tie the game back up and did so when Ryan Raven scored four minutes into the final period. Both teams were not able to score any more goals in regulation time which sent the game into overtime tied 3-3.
A couple minutes left in the 3-on-3 overtime, a penalty shot was awarded to the Huntsville Havoc's Ray Ortiz. Ortiz took complete advantage of his opportunity and fired the puck past Christie to win the game for the Havoc.
The Huntsville Havoc will host the Augusta RiverHawks on Thursday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. The Pensacola Ice Flyers hit the road once again to play the Columbus Cottonmouth on Tuesday, Nov.20 at 7:30 p.m. EST.
