Mississippi Surge News Release

Corey Tamblyn's second goal of the game, 30 seconds into overtime, lifted the Mississippi Surge to a 5-4 victory over the Louisiana IceGators Sunday at the Cajundome in Lafayette, La. The win was the Surge's third triumph in as many days after weekend wins over the Mississippi RiverKings and Huntsville Havoc on Friday and Saturday respectively.

The Surge raced to a 3-0 lead over Louisiana as Tommy Lange scored a pair of first period goals sandwiched around a goal by Matt Gordan. Lange's first goal came with Surge defenseman James Isaacs serving a boarding penalty and was the Surge's first shorthanded goal of the season.

Gordan's goal was assisted by Richard Vanderhoek and Payden Benning. Benning was playing in his first game for the Surge, and was added to the roster as defensemen Brad Good was loaned to the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL.

Matt Miller got Louisiana on the scoreboard at 9:17 of the second period, but Tamblyn restored the Surge's three-goal lead a minute and a half later. Before the second period ended however, Matt Robertson got Louisiana back within two goals.

The Surge ran into penalty trouble in the third period, and Louisiana capitalized with two power play goals, each with a two man advantage. Kirk Bycynski struck just 12 seconds after Lange went off for high sticking, joining Adam Stuart who was already in the penalty box. When Trent Bonnett joined Lange in the penalty box for tripping at 13:24, it gave Louisiana another 5-on-3 advantage. Shawn McNeil took advantage of the open ice and blasted in the tying goal off a rebound from the slot.

But in overtime it didn't take Tamblyn long to take a feed from Isaacs and salt away the third straight win for the Surge.

Mississippi returns home to face the Columbus Cottonmouths Wednesday. The Surge will then embark on a six game road swing and won't return home until December 14.
