IceGators Fall in Overtime to Surge

Lafayette, Louisiana--The Louisiana IceGators may want to change their name to the "Cardiac Crocodilians." For the third time in the last four games, the IceGators trailed their opponents by two or more goals entering the third period. Tonight, unlike those other two times, the IceGators could not seal the deal, falling to the Mississippi Surge 5-4 in overtime. Corey Tamblyn netted the game winner--his second goal of the night--only 30 seconds into the extra frame.
The IceGators (7-1-1) will host a rematch against the Surge Friday at 7:05 P. M.
"We came out a little flat," remarked IceGators Coach Kevin Kaminski after the game. "After the first period, I thought we played a really good 40 minutes of hockey. But when you're coming right off of a long road trip and playing shorthanded, you sometimes make stupid mistakes."
The Surge (4-3-1) dominated the first period of play. Tommy Lange scored twice, and Matt Gordon scored once to give Mississippi a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. The IceGators rebounded and scored twice in the second period. Goals from Matt Miller and Matt Robertson sandwiched Tamblyn's first goal of the night to cut the IceGator deficit to two heading into the third.
Shawn McNeil contributed to the two goals that lead to the late tie. He assisted on Kirk Byczynski's 5-on-3 goal at the 12:47 mark of the third period. Less than a minute later, McNeil scored a goal of his own off of assists from Robert Short and Matt Miller.
Despite coming up short against the Surge, Kaminski is pleased with his team's performance over the past few days, especially considering the IceGators' injury situation. "Overall, I think it was a successful weekend," he said. "Considering we have nine guys on injured reserve and our equipment manager (Peter Lurges) is now our backup goalie, we're doing alright. We picked up five out of six points. We made a huge comeback after such a short turnaround from a road trip. Between the time changes, road trips, and injuries, we've played well, and now we're alone in first place."
