ICE Edge Broncos 5-4

April 16, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Winnipeg Ice News Release

Winnipeg looked to get back in the win column as they faced off against the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night. The ICE are coming off a hard fought loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday, while the Broncos are currently on a six game losing streak, with their last defeat coming at the hands of the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday. Daniel Hauser and Isaac Poulter received the starts for the ICE and the Broncos, respectively.

The Broncos started the game off on the front foot as Cohner Saleski beat a stick-less Daniel Hauser just under the arm. The goal came at 8:46, with Owen Williams and Owen Pickering picking up the assists. Winnipeg responded on a delayed penalty as Owen Pederson made a move around Poulter and threw the puck to the front of the net where it ended up going off a skate and into the open cage. Conor Geekie picked up the assist on the goal that came at 11:28. The ICE would take the lead on Connor McClennon's twelfth goal of the season as he tapped in a rebounded Pederson shot from the front of the net. Shots were 16-14 for Swift Current heading into the first intermission.

Michael Milne would give Winnipeg a two goal lead as he deflected an Owen Boucher shot top corner past Poulter. The assist would mark Boucher's first career WHL point, as the goal came at 13:29. Swift Current would respond exactly a minute later when Cole Nagy found Carter Stebbings, who then found the back of the net for his third of the year as he snuck one under Hauser's left arm. Swift Current continued to lead 32-24 in the shot category after two periods.

Josh Davies would pull the Broncos even as he redirected a Michael Farren shot from the point, up and over Hauser. The goal came just 3:43 into the period. The ICE regained their lead at 10:27 as McClennon threaded the needle to find Pederson to the left of Poulter, and the ICE forward made no mistake as he roofed it for his second of the game. Winnipeg added another goal two minutes later as Geekie intercepted a pass in the Broncos' zone and laid it off to Milne who put it past Poulter for his second of the night. Williams brought Swift Current back to within one with a point shot on the power play that went past a screened Hauser top right corner. With Mike Ladyman in the box for a delay of game, the Broncos had almost a minute of 6-on-4 but they could not capitalize as Hauser made some big saves in the dying seconds to record his sixth straight win of the season.

Winnipeg is back in action on Sunday for another rivalry matchup with the Brandon Wheat Kings. Puck drop is 5:00pm CT.
