Regina, Sask. - The Winnipeg ICE showed why they're an Eastern Conference favourite on Wednesday night at home, as they rolled to a 5-2 victory over the Regina Pats. Zach Benson led the way with a pair of goals, while Matthew Savoie, Chase Bertholet and Jakin Smallwood also scored.

The Regiment got power play goals from Zack Stringer and Drew Englot in the loss, while Matthew Kieper did everything he could to keep the Pats in the game, finishing with 36 saves. Ryker Evans (1A) and Stanislav Svozil (1A) each increased their point streaks to three games.

The Pats were outshot 41-18, including 38-11 in the first two periods.

GAME SUMMARY

The ICE took control of this game right from the get-go, scoring the opening goal on a power play midway through the period thanks to a well-placed shot from Benson.

They home side carried the 1-0 lead into the break, along with a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Winnipeg would go on to score three consecutive goals in the second period, including two early on.

Just 2:43 into the period, Savoie made it a 2-0 game on another ICE power play, after he fired home a rebound from the bottom of the right circle. Under a minute later, Bertholet extended the lead to 3-0 on a 2-on-1 rush.

Despite Kieper's best efforts to keep the Pats in the game, Smallwood made things go from bad to worse when he buried his first of the season on a 2-on-0 rush with 5:15 to go in the middle frame.

The Pats did get some life just before the second intermission after Zack Stringer had the puck deflect off him and into the back of the net on a power play with 1:21 to go in the second.

After 40 minutes, the Pats were facing an uphill battle: down 4-1.

Benson scored his second of the game on another 2-on-0 rush just over five minutes into the third period to make the score 5-1.

Englot got the Pats to within three goals with under nine minutes remaining, after a nice touch in front and a solid pass from Sloan Stanick, but it was far too little, too late, and the final score was 5-2.

The final shots on goal in the game were 41-18 for the ICE, with each team going 2-for-6 on the power play.

THEY SAID IT

"I was disappointed with the overall execution of our game plan and that's on us as individuals. We couldn't even execute a team game because we didn't do things right with the puck and when you manage the puck the wrong way again against a real good team like Winnipeg, you're not going to win." - Pats Head Coach Dave Struch
