Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears fall to the Fayetteville FireAntz 2-1 in a shootout in front of a raucous crowd of 4,057 but end the week by securing 5 of a possible 6 points in the standings.
Knoxville's Berkley Scott continued his torrid scoring pace when he notched his fifth goal in three games when he beat Fayetteville's netminder Kevin Murdock off a precision play from defenseman Ryan Hill at 14:37 of the first period. Knoxville looked to increase their lead to 2-0 when Scott was awarded a penalty shot with 45 seconds remaining in the period but Murdock was equal to the task to keep the Antz in the game.
Fayetteville looked to take charge in the second period as they outshot the Ice Bears 13-5 and scored the only goal of the period when Randy Cameron beat Ice Bears goaltender Bryan Hince at 11:51 of the second period.
The teams entered the third tied at 1 and despite numerous opportunities from both teams, it looked as if it would take an extra period to decide the winner. The three-on-three overtime format provided a bevy of chances for each team in the bonus period, but both netminders held steadfast forcing the game to be decided in a shootout.
Murdock shut the door by stopping all four shooters for the Ice Bears and Fayetteville's Trever Hertz and Jan Safar each scored to secure the extra point in the standings for the FireAntz.
The Ice Bears return to action for the New Year at home when they host the Peoria Riverman on Friday, Jan 2nd for World Record Night presented by Q100 and Saturday, Jan 3rd for Kids Run the Show Night presented by Star 102.1. To order tickets call 865-656-4444 or visit www.knoxvilleicebears.com.
