Peoria Rivermen News Release
PEORIA - The Peoria Rivermen ended a five-game winning streak with a 3-1 loss to the Columbus Cottonmouths on Saturday night at Carver Arena.
The Cottonmouths scored a rare power play goal to open the scoring 2:50 into the game as Louis Belisle converted from the bottom of the left circle assisted by Kyle Thomas and Shawn Bates.
The Snakes increased the lead to 2-0 with 7:48 left in the second period when Thomas intercepted a pass high in the Columbus zone during a Rivermen power play and skated in on an unmolested breakaway, converting his own rebound for an unassisted shorthanded goal.
Columbus sealed the win with a running wrist shot from the left circle by Neilsson Arcibal assisted by Max Cook and Matt Gingera with 3:35 left in the game. Josh Harris prevented the shutout with 1:45 remaining with a low stick-side blast from the bottom of the right circle, assisted by Mike Slowikowski and Alex Hudson.
Andrew Loewen took the win with 28 saves while Eric Levine suffered a 25-save loss. Each team received six power plays with the Cottonmouths registering the only tally with their first goal.
Before the game, the Rivermen traded veteran defenseman Nick Schneider to Huntsville for future considerations. Schneider registered one goal and five assists for six points and a plus-7 rating in 20 games this season with Peoria.
The Rivermen travel to Knoxville for games on Friday and Saturday before returning home for the following two weekends for three-game series against Mississippi and Louisiana.
