Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Knoxville, TN - Two second period goals, including one from new defensemen Jay Birnie, weren't enough to overcome the quick start from the Fayetteville FireAntz, and the Knoxville Ice Bears head into an extended road trip with a loss. After some big roster changes in the last week and a great win against Augusta last Saturday, the Ice Bears fell to the FireAntz 3-2 in front 4,182 fans at the Civic Coliseum.
It was a rough first period for the Ice Bears. Fayetteville's DJ Fimiani scored the first goal of the game 2:38 minutes in, followed 14 seconds later by a second FireAntz goal scored by Jeffrey Borrows putting the visitors up quickly 2-0. Burrows scored his second point of the game 17:18 minutes into the period to finish off the first with the FireAntz leading 3-0.
The Ice Bears came back in the second period with vengeance. At the 2:33 minute mark, Frank Furdero scored the first Ice Bears goal of the night with assistance from Jason Ford and Jozef Kubaliak.
The Ice Bears held off all of Fayetteville's seven shots on goal in the period. With 2 minutes left on the clock, Knoxville's Birnie made it a 2-3 game with a shot past Fayetteville goalie Mike Spillane. His first goal as an Ice Bear was assisted by Dan Buccella and Dan Mercer.
The Ice Bears went into the second intermission trailing by one and leading 24 to 18 in shots on goal.
Knoxville fought for the win through the third, but they were unable to match the FireAntz on the score board. It was an aggressive period and players earned over half of the games penalties in the final period.
The final five minutes of play had the Ice Bears pressing in the offensive zone, playing almost the entire time in the Fayetteville zone but were unable to find the back of the net. The FireAntz held their ground, defeating the Ice Bears 3-2. The next Knoxville Ice Bears home game will be Friday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. against the Huntsville Havoc.
