Gehring Scores Overtime Winner for RiverHawks

February 18, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

It took extra time, but the RiverHawks were able to avenge Thursday's loss to the Pensacola Ice Flyers by defeating them 4-3 in overtime Friday night in Florida. Jim Gehring scored his fourth goal of the season just 1:19 into the overtime period to give his team the victory.

The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the RiverHawks, which came on the heels of an eight game winning streak that saw them rise to a tie second place in the SPHL standings. The win gives them sole possession of second place, just four points back of the first-place Mississippi Surge.

It was the first RiverHawks' appearance for newly signed goaltender Peter Skogaard, who recorded the win by making 29 saves. Skogaard signed with the RiverHawks earlier in the week to replace starter Jon Olthuis, who was recalled to the Central Hockey League.

The RiverHawks were led offensively once again by Captain Matt Auffrey, who picked up two assists including setting up Branden Kosolofsky for a short-handed goal in the third period which tied the game and sent it to overtime. Luke Lucyk and Neil Graham also added goals for the RiverHawks.

The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Saturday, February 19th as they face the Louisiana Ice Gators. It is Faith and Family Night featuring a pre and post-game concert from the band Atlas. The puck drops at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at the James Brown Arena Box Office, by calling 1-877-4AUGTIX, or by visiting www.georgialinatix.com.
