Ice Bears Pay Tribute to Swider with Victory

Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears returned to the Civic Coliseum to rematch the Pensacola Ice Flyers after their win over Knoxville last night. An excited crowd of 3,380 fans watched as the Ice Bears came out ready for redemption. Knoxville's defeated the number two ranked SPHL team 2-1.

The first period echoed last night's first period with neither team able to found the back of the net. Knoxville's Bryan Hince turned aside Pensacola's seven shots on goal. The Ice Bears outshot the Ice Flyers with ten period shots on goal, but John Griggs strong.

The Ice Bears skated a 5-on-4 power play 1:48 minutes into the second period when Justin Alonzo was penalized 2 minutes for hooking. The Ice Bears used the man advantage to score the first goal of the game. Francis Drolet ripped a one-timer on Griggs' glove-side for a 1-0 lead. The power play goal was assisted by Jason Price and Jeremy Klaver.

Hince made key saves to hold the Ice Flyers at bay. The Ice Bears saw two more power plays and the Ice Flyers saw one, but no other points were scored. Knoxville entered the third period leading 1-0.

53 seconds into the third period Ben Souders solidified the Ice Bears' win with his sixth goal of the season. Eric Satim and Brady Vandenberk were credited with the assist.

The teams skated 4-on-4 when Brett Valliquette and Brett Lutes were sent to the box for roughing. Then John Higgins was penalized 2 minutes for hooking, giving the Ice Flyers a 4-on-3 advantage. Knoxville defense held them off to maintain their 2-0 lead.

Pensacola finally lit the lamp with 4:15 left in the game. Malcolm Lyles slapped the puck, it hit off Hince's pads, and caught the net. In a last effort, Pensacola pulled their goalie at the 1:13 mark to skate an extra attacker. But even skating 6-on-4 after Higgins was given a 2 minute penalty, Pensacola was not able to tie the game, and Knoxville sealed victory with a 2-1 win.

The Ice Bears will return to home ice on Thursday, Jan. 9 to face off with the Fayetteville FireAntz. It will be another $1,000 Thursday as the Ice Bears honor everyone in the healthcare profession. Come wearing your scrubs and receive $2 off at the box office.
