Ice Bears Fall to RiverKings

Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears returned to home ice tonight to face the Mississippi RiverKings in front of 2,631 Ice Bears fans. This was only the second time the teams have met this season. The first time the Ice Bears took the win, but tonight the RiverKings were the victors, 7-1.

The RiverKings dominated the scoreboard in the first period. They notched their first goal at the 5:20 minute mark. Their second followed at 8:36. After the second goal, the Ice Bears put rookie Cody Rosen in goal for the first time on home ice.

At 10:37 the RiverKings upped their lead to 3-0. Just under one minute later Captain David Segal dropped his gloves to fight Tyler Sheldrake. Hince returned to his position in the goal to finish out the first period.

The RiverKings starting the second period skating 5-on-4. They notched three more goals during the period. The Ice Bears ruined Mississippi's chance at a shut out with just 3 minutes left in the second. John Higgins buried a rebound for his sixth goal of the season. Cody Dion and Jason Price assisted the Ice Bears' goal.

At the 20 minute mark Knoxville's Ben Schoeneberger and Segal and Mississippi's Charles LaChance and Devin Mantha all four threw their gloves for fights to end a heated second period.

Rosen returned to the net for the third period and stopped all of Mississippi's 12 shots on goal in the final period. Neither team scored in the third. The physical game totaled 134 penalty minutes between the two teams.

The Ice Bears and RiverKings will rematch tomorrow, Saturday Dec. 21, at the Civic Coliseum. Tomorrow is the Ice Bears' annual Baby Derby. Come cheer on the Ice Bears' youngest fans as they race across the ice. The Ice Bears will also be wearing the much anticipated Christmas sweater themed jersey which will be auctioned off after the game.
