Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

Kannapolis, NC – The I's needed Gio Gonzalez to play stopper. He did just that. Gonzalez was sharp at the start and fought off some late control trouble to earn his fifth victory of the year with seven innings of one hit ball, no runs, and seven strikeouts. The I's offense got supported Gonzalez with single runs in the third, fourth, and sixth. And John Hurd pitched the eighth and ninth for his second save of the year.

Kannapolis got on the board when Francisco Hernandez walked and Boomer Berry was hit by a pitch to lead off the third. Sean Smith sacrificed the runners to second and third before a Jose De Los Santos ground ball scored Hernandez. Kannapolis added another on a fielder's choice in the fourth scoring Ryan McCarthy. Javier Castillo scored on a Berry RBI single in the sixth.

Gonzalez retired the first five batters he faced and took a no hitter into the sixth inning. He ran into a little wildness in the seventh walking one and hitting another but induced a couple of ground ball outs to get out of trouble.

Hurd gave one run back in the eighth on back to back hits with two outs but settled down in the eighth and ninth.

The Intimidators will seek a series split with Augusta Monday night at 7:05. The Greenjackets will send RHP Caleb Salankey (5-3 3.03) to the hill. Meanwhile because of a double header on Friday, the Intimidators will have to throw a spot starter that has yet to be announced. Tickets for the final game of this eight game home stand are still available by calling 704.932.FANS or online at intimidatorsbaseball.com.
