Iowa Cubs News Release
Colorado Springs, CO - The Iowa Cubs (15-19) had a season-high 21 hits, including three home runs, in an 11-10 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (15-20) in game two of tonight's double-header at Security Service Field. The win earned the Cubs a split of the twin bill after the Sox won 11-5 in game one. The Sky Sox lead this series 2-1.
The Cubs jumped out early with three runs in each of the first two innings of game two. Brad Snyder belted a two-run homer and Bobby Scales had an RBI double in the first. Fernando Perez had an RBI single and Lou Montanez blasted a two-run homer in the second. After the Sox scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second, the Cubs added two more runs in the top of the fourth. Bryan LaHair launched a solo homer. Scales singled and scored on a double by Scott Moore.
The Sox came back to make it a game with three runs in the fourth against starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx and three runs in the fifth on a wind-blown three-run homer by Josh Fields in the fifth that cut the Cubs lead to 8-7.
The Cubs responded with three runs in the sixth off Jesus Colome. Moore and pinch-hitter Marquez Smith had RBI singles and Steve Clevenger scored on a wild pitch. Those became valuable insurance runs when the Sox rallied again. Charlie Blackmon led off the bottom of the sixth with a homer off Chris Carpenter. Carpenter gave up another hit and a walk before getting out of the inning. Cubs' closer Scott Maine came in for the bottom of the seventh. Maine hadn't allowed a run in 11.2 innings over his last eight appearances, but was touched for two runs in the frame on an RBI double by Blackmon and an RBI single by Ty Wiggington. After a walk to Mike Jacobs put the potential tying run into scoring position and the potential winning run on base, Maine got Chris Nelson to ground into a force out to end the game and earned his sixth save.
Carpenter (2-0) was credited with the win while Sox starter Andrew Graham (0-1) got the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits in an inning and a third. Scales finished with five hits to set a new season-high.
In game one, the Sox built the early lead against Cubs' starter Jay Jackson. Eric Young, Jr. drove in the first run with a two-out hit in the second inning. Eliezer Alfonzo had an RBI double and scored on a base hit by Des Moines native Matt Macri in the third inning. Nelson tripled with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth to drive in three and the Sox led 6-1.
The Cubs came back with a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Perez and three in the sixth to chase Sox starter Josh Muecke. LaHair drove in a run with his third hit of the game. Moore added an RBI single off reliever Matt Daley and Matt Camp picked up an RBI while reaching on a fielder's choice. Daley picked off Camp to end the inning and preserved the Sox 6-5 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Sox pulled away with five runs off reliever Esmailin Caridad. Alfonzo crushed a three-run homer and Willy Taveras connected on a two-run shot to cap the scoring.
Muecke (2-3) picked up the win while Jackson (1-2) got the loss.
The Cubs and Sky Sox wrap up this series tomorrow at 7:05 Central time. RH Robert Coello (2-3, 6.75) is scheduled to pitch for the Cubs against RH Claudio Vargas (0-0, 5.59) for the Sox. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
