Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa (May 4, 2015) - Quad Cities River Bandits infielder Mott Hyde has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week for his performance during the week of April 27-May 3, the Midwest League announced on Monday.
Hyde, 23, is the first River Bandit to win Midwest League Player of the Week honors this season. He is the first River Bandit honored with a Midwest League weekly award since pitcher Michael Feliz won Pitcher of the Week for last Aug. 4-10. The last River Bandit to win Player of the Week was Ronnie Mitchell for the week of May 26-June 1, 2014.
In six games (three at second base, one at shortstop and two as the designated hitter), Hyde went a combined 11-for-22 with four doubles, one triple, three RBIs, five runs scored, four walks and no strikeouts, while posting a .577 on-base percentage, .773 slugging percentage and 1.350 on-base plus slugging (OPS) for the week. The River Bandits went 5-1 during the week, posting a still-active five-game winning streak to reach 18-6 - their best 24-game start since 1992.
Hyde hit safely in all six games and through Sunday led the league in doubles (12) and extra-base hits (13), was third in on-base percentage (.453) and stood tied for third in runs scored (17). He is also currently fifth in the league and the Astros minor league system with a .347 batting average. His .542 slugging percentage and .995 OPS are second only to teammate Derek Fisher for the league lead.
Hyde, a native of Resaca, Ga., was selected by the Houston Astros out of Georgia Tech University in the 26th round of the 2014 draft. In his first professional season, he led short-season Class-A Tri-City in games played (70), runs scored (35) and doubles (18), while posting a .254 batting average, three home runs, 31 RBIs and a .720 OPS.
For the same one-week span as Hyde, Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve was named the American League Co-Player of the Week on Monday. Altuve was the first player to win the award this season for the Astros, who are an American League-best 18-7 - the best 25-game start in Astros franchise history.
