Kernels Top Timber Rattlers to Begin Road Trip

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. - The Kernels topped the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-3 on Monday night to begin a six-game road trip. Six of the team's nine hits went for extra-bases. Cedar Rapids drew a season-best 10 walks on the night.

Max Murphy went 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs batted in. T.J. White and Trey Vavra both reached four of five times. White had two doubles, a single and one walk while Vavra collected a single and three base on balls.

Jared Wilson (3-0) went a season-high six innings on the mound for the Kernels, striking out a season-best seven. He allowed three runs on six hits while walking two. Zack Tillery went the final three innings for his five save, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out four.

The Kernels (14-11) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-out single by Vavra. Tanner English started the game with a base on balls, the third straight game he had led off with a walk. He stole second and took third on a passed ball. With two outs, Vavra's RBI single fell into shallow center to give Cedar Rapids the first run of the night.

Murphy put the Kernels up 3-0 with another two-out single to center in the third inning. Nick Gordon walked with one out, and Zack Larson doubled to put two in scoring position. Murphy's single up the middle scored them both, and Cedar Rapids jumped in front by three.

Wisconsin (8-17) cut the Kernels lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning on Carlos Leal's RBI double that scored Monte Harrison, who walked to start the frame.

The Timber Rattlers then tied the game 3-3 in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Dustin DeMuth began the inning with a double, and he scored on Mitch Meyer's RBI triple. Meyer came home on a wild pitch.

Cedar Rapids scored three times in the fifth inning, moving in front 6-3. Larson and Vavra drew consecutive walks with one out in the inning. After two wild pitches, Larson scored to give the Kernels a one-run lead. Vavra scored on a two-out RBI triple to right-center by Jorge Fernandez. Fernandez scored the third run of the inning when a pitch from Wisconsin reliever Mark Williams went to the back stop. Fernandez would have been out at home, but Williams dropped the throw from catcher Greg McCall at the plate. The missed catch allowed Fernandez to score and put the Kernels up by three.

The Kernels took a 7-3 lead in the eighth inning on English's RBI double to right field. It scored Pat Kelly, who reached on a fielder's choice.

Cedar Rapids tacked on two more runs in the ninth inning, extending their lead to 9-3. Vavra led off with a walk and quickly scored on Murphy's RBI double. Murphy scored later in the inning on White's RBI single.

Luis Ortega (0-3) was saddled with the loss for Wisconsin as he allowed four runs over 4 1/3 innings.

The series at Wisconsin continues on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. LHP Mat Batts (2-1, 2.19) gets the start for the Kernels while RHP Orlando Torrez (0-1, 3.95) takes the hill for Wisconsin.
