Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB.: The Lethbridge Hurricanes made their Home Opener a success by downing the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2 on Friday night. Mitch Maxwell scored two goals and Linden Rowat made 25 saves to lead the Hurricanes to the victory. The Oil Kings streak of six games with at least a point is over, and there was more bad news on the injury front. Edmonton defenseman Mark Pysyk left the game early in the second period with an undisclosed injury.
"The guys are competing hard and you are going to get banged up," said Head Coach Steve Pleau. "There is nothing you can do about that. The key for us right now is to be more disciplined because it is hard to get it going with guys in the box all the time."
Lethbridge was two for six on the powerplay and opened the scoring a man up early in the second period. Brent Henke, an Edmonton native, tipped a Mike Reddington point shot past Oil Kings starter Torrie Jung. Henke, a former Oil King, is off to a good start with four goals on the season.
The third period was a wild one as the Hurricanes outscored the Oil Kings four goals to two. Maxwell led the Hurricanes with two goals, Henke added an empty net goal to finish with a pair, and Carter Ashton had a goal and two assists. The Oil Kings goal scorers were Devin Balness and Tomas Vincour. Mitch Moroz picked up an assist in his first WHL game. The 15 year old forward was called up from Midget hockey because the Oil Kings opened the game with five regulars on the sidelines with injuries.
The Oil Kings will be in Swift Current Saturday night for the final game of their weekend road trip against the Broncos. You can catch all the action on the Team 1260 beginning at 7:30 pm. The Oil Kings next home game is Octobr 12th at 2:00 pm against the Brandon Wheat Kings. It is Thanksgiving Monday and the Oil Kings will Stuff the Bus for Edmonton's Food Bank. Fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable item to donate to the cause. It is the first of a four game home stand for the Oil Kings.
